Christmas may be months away, but New Braunfels’ well-known Santa and Mrs. Claus said they want to spread holiday cheer during the uncertain times.

In a video that was uploaded on YouTube last week, Phil and Lynda Cayton, who play Christmas’ famous couple, chat about the importance of social distancing and staying home with their families during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Like you, all of us at the North Pole are staying home, limiting our exposure to others and washing our hands often,” Santa Phil said in the video, adding that even the elves are practicing social distancing.

Santa Phil told mySA.com he and his wife created the video because they wanted to help keep children, who are home from school for an extended length of time, at ease.

“We wanted them to know that it’s not a time to be scared,” he said. “Although these may seem like scary times, we want them to still believe in the joy in life. I thought, if it came from us, the kids would really start to learn and not be so scared.”

Before December rolls around, the couple typically uploads videos about Christmastime. However, Santa Phil said they will make more videos sooner this year.

“Christmas is a great time for an expression of love and caring, and we are trying to bring that into the times now,” he said. “We feel like it’s needed.”
